Pappa Loved Mamma
by Mel Tatum
tto: Garth Brooks’ Pappa Loved Mamma

Papa wrote a book nearly all his life
You know it drove mama crazy being an author’s wife
The parts she couldn’t handle were all the boring bits
I guess she needed more to hold than just a manuscript

Papa left Mama each and every week
to attend his writer’s group and give them a sneak peek
Mama would wait for him to be gone and
when daddy’d drive out, she’d go to a con

Mama was a looker, Lord, how she shined
Papa was a writer who could be quite blind
Papa loved Mama, Mama loved men
Papa won’t convention, Mama’s with the fen

Well, it was bound to happen and one night it did
Papa came home and it was just us kids
He had a dozen roses and a publishing deal
If he was lookin’ to surprise us, that was how we feel

I heard him cry for Mama up and down the hall
Then I heard a muffled thwack against the bedroom wall
That old Gremlin engine made a grating sound
When Papa fired it up and headed into town

Well the picture in the fanzine showed the scene real well
Papa’s car had slammed into the local motel
The desk clerk said he knew Papa was a fool
When the car hit the wall and bounced into the pool
